Abstract

Indah Lailatul Fitria. 2025. Parental Acceptance of a 4-Year-Old Autistic Child. Thesis. Early Childhood Teacher Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Narotama University Surabaya. Self-acceptance is the ability of an individual to accept and reconcile with all the strengths and weaknesses associated with them and to maximize their potential. The process of reaching the stage of acceptance involves several stages, namely denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Not everyone goes through all those stages in order; some only experience two or three stages, and some even skip directly to the final stage without going through the previous four stages. This is due to being influenced by several self-acceptance factors. Therefore, this research was conducted with the aim of understanding the self-acceptance process of parents towards their 4-year-old autistic child. This research was conducted using a qualitative approach. The subjects in the research are 2 subjects. In the research, observation and interview methods were used. The results of the analysis conducted show that there are differences among parents when moving towards the stage of self-acceptance. These different stages are influenced by several factors, namely the ability to understand oneself, the absence of obstacles from the surrounding environment, self-support, and social support. Parental self-acceptance is very important because it can support the optimal growth and development of the child. Keywords: Self-Acceptance, Parents, Autism
